Lot 162: An English Cast Iron Stanley Bailey Jack Plane, No. 5 1/2
An English jack plane, featuring a wide bed and upright wooden handles. The tool is constructed with a cast iron body including a sole and sides, a steel cutting iron with a chip breaker, and a plated steel lever cap. It is fitted with a rear wooden tote handle and a front wooden knob. The lever cap is decorated with an embossed rectangular emblem containing the text STANLEY, showing remnants of orange paint in the recesses. The toe is embossed BAILEY, and the bed behind the front knob is marked MADE IN ENGLAND. The heel bears the embossed number No. 5 1/2. The cutting iron is stamped with STANLEY, MADE IN ENGLAND, and the instruction 25° BEVEL FOR GRINDING.
Condition report:
The plane shows signs of significant age and heavy workshop use, requiring restoration. The metal components, including the sole, cheeks, and lever cap, exhibit widespread surface oxidation, light rust, and areas of pitting (photos 1, 2). The wooden tote and front knob show heavy abrasive wear, numerous scuffs, and substantial loss of the original finish (photos 1, 3). There is an accumulation of sawdust and grime within the internal cavities and crevices (photo 1). The tool appears to be mechanically complete with all adjustments and the iron assembly present.
