Lot 180: UK Bank of England One Pound Banknote, L. K. O'Brien Signature
A Bank of England one pound banknote, featuring green printing on off-white paper. The obverse design incorporates a seated Britannia vignette within a decorative scrollwork frame at the left and a large numeral 1 medallion at the right. The central text reads I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF ONE POUND. At the lower right, the legend LONDON is printed above the signature L. K. O’BRIEN and the title CHIEF CASHIER. The bank title BANK OF ENGLAND is printed in an ornate, stylised font across the top centre. A serial number C49L 490797 is printed twice in red ink at the upper right and lower left. The banknote features a circular watermark area at the bottom centre. No other marks or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The banknote shows signs of light circulation and handling. A sharp vertical centre fold is visible across the entire height of the note (photo 1). Several light handling creases and ripples are present across the surface of the paper (photo 1). Minor yellowing and toning are evident along the top and bottom edges (photo 1). A small brown foxing spot is located near the word LONDON in the lower right quadrant (photo 2). The paper edges show light wear but remain intact. The note is not housed in a protective case or capsule.
